Mat Patterns is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training journal
designed to help you track your sessions, rolls, techniques,
goals, and overall training patterns over time.
It started as a digital replacement for a handwritten
training journal and has grown to include coaching,
school, scheduling, and family features.
Yes. Individual training logging is free to use.
Schools can also use team features, with additional paid
features available for school administration, coaching,
and family functionality.
You can log things such as:
- Training sessions
- Gi, No-Gi, open mat, drilling, and other class types
- Session duration and intensity
- Rolls and training partners
- Submissions and submission attempts
- Takedowns, sweeps, escapes, passes, positions, and other techniques
- Techniques taught, drilled, reviewed, or practiced positionally
- Notes about your training
You can also create training goals and track progress from your logged activity.
Logging your training can help you recognize patterns,
see which techniques you use most often, identify areas
you may be neglecting, and keep a record of your progress
over time.
Yes. You can create goals around submissions,
techniques, guards, positions, and other parts
of your training.
Progress is updated automatically as you log
matching training activity.
No. Mat Patterns is not intended to rank teammates
against each other or turn normal training into a leaderboard.
The goal is to help you understand your own training
and give coaches useful insight without making everyday
practice overly competitive.
Yes. Schools and teams can invite users through an
invitation link or code.
Being part of a school gives you access to team-related
features while keeping your personal training account
your own.
Anyone with a Mat Patterns account can create a school
or team.
You do not need to be a coach, gym owner, or administrator
to get started.
The person who creates the school can invite members
and manage appropriate coach or administrator roles.
Yes. You do not need to belong to a school or team
to use Mat Patterns.
You can simply use it as your personal BJJ training journal.
Yes. You can leave a school while keeping your
personal Mat Patterns account and training history.
Yes. School administrators can assign roles to other
members so coaches and administrators can help manage
the team.
Yes. Schools can publish their training schedule so
members and connected parents or guardians can see
upcoming classes.
Yes. Schools can post announcements for their community.
Depending on the announcement, schools can make updates
available to training members, guardians, or both.
Schools can share an invite code or invitation link.
They can also generate a printable QR-code flyer that
teammates can scan to begin the signup and school-join process.
No. Your training partners and individual roll details
are private to your account.
Other users cannot see who you trained with, how many
times you tapped, or how many times you submitted a
training partner.
Coaches and authorized school administrators can access
information made available through team features,
including broader team activity, aggregate technique
patterns, and available student training summaries.
Individual roll-by-roll details, training partners,
who tapped whom, and private notes remain private.
No. Your training history is not automatically made public.
Some broader information may be visible through team or
coaching features when you join a school, but Mat Patterns
is not designed as a public social network.
Yes. Schools with family features enabled can connect
parents and guardians with children who train at the school.
Guardians can see family-related information such as
schedules and school announcements without needing access
to private training logs.
No. A parent or guardian can create a child profile
without creating a separate Mat Patterns login for the child.
The same account can be connected as both a training member
and a parent or guardian.
There is no need to create separate accounts.
No. A parent or guardian can use Mat Patterns for
family-related school access without being a training member.
No. Family access is separate from a user's private
training journal.
Guardians can access family and school information made
available to them, but private rolls, training partners,
tap counts, and personal notes remain private.
Yes. Mat Patterns can be installed as a Progressive Web App
on supported phones, tablets, and desktop browsers.
This lets you launch it from your home screen or desktop
much like a traditional app.
Mat Patterns is currently a web application and
Progressive Web App rather than a separate native
App Store or Google Play application.
Yes. Mat Patterns supports browser push notifications
on supported devices and browsers.
Notifications may include training reminders,
school announcements, and other useful account activity.
Notification availability can depend on your browser
and device settings.
No. Mat Patterns does not sell, rent, or trade
your personal information.

and associated personal information.
Some limited records may need to be retained for security,
backup, fraud prevention, or legal purposes.
Mat Patterns was created by Jason Favor,
a martial artist and software developer.
Mat Patterns grew out of his own habit of keeping
a written training journal.
No. The creator trains at Ares Omaha, but Mat Patterns
is an independently created application and is not an
official product of Ares BJJ unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Mat Patterns is independently developed and maintained.
